President Michelle DeNault, MD

Welcome, and thank you for your work in promoting healthy development of children, adolescents, and families in Colorado.  I’m Michelle DeNault and I’m excited to be your 2021 CCAPS president.  I am a board certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in Denver, CO.  I completed medical training in Detroit, MI at Wayne State University, residency in adult psychiatry in Denver, CO at the University of Colorado, and finally fellowship in child & adolescent psychiatry at Children’s Hospital Colorado.  My relationship with CCAPS began in fellowship where I was able to get involved as a fellow liaison, and subsequently served as councilor prior to beginning my tenure as president.

I currently serve as a medical director for MindCare Solutions, providing consult-liaison services to numerous hospitals across the country via telepsychiatry.  I provide consultations to about 50 hospitals in 6 states, with more than half of the hospitals I serve scattered in all corners of Colorado.  I am passionate about telepsychiatry and its ability to bridge the barrier of physical distance.  I value how virtual medicine has allowed many of us to continue to safely serve our patients, and though there are other barriers to virtual care, I am reminded daily of the marvel of healing patients who would not otherwise have received treatment.

Our field faces critical workforce shortages and most counties in Colorado do not have a single child & adolescent psychiatrist.  I find it exciting to help leverage systems-based practice to deliver care effectively, and much of my current work is focused around partnering with hospitals to develop and maintain a robust quality tele-psychiatric service.  If you are interested in the basics of converting a C/L group to a virtual model, I invite you check out my short guide: Tips to Convert to C/L Telepsychiatry

Another career passion of mine is teaching and fostering excellent psychiatrists. I currently serve as faculty at The Medical Center of Aurora’s residency program and supervise the emergency psychiatry rotation for the PGY-2 residents.   To ensure our great work continues, I plan to continue our past CCAPS president’s, Dr. Chris Rogers, vision of bringing awareness of CAP to students of all ages.  I invite each of you to join us in this undertaking and let us know if you are already engaged in community projects. We would love to celebrate and support your efforts.

In my personal time, I’ve enjoyed participating in choral and local amateur vocal groups over the years, and recently discovered the fun of virtual karaoke.  I have more plants than light indoors and find gardening in the Summer a much more successful endeavor.  I love hosting parties and events both personally and professionally and I will bring this enthusiasm to connect people into our work at CCAPS.

I would love to hear your thoughts on any proposed legislation or other avenues where we can persist in promoting children’s mental health through our advocacy committee. We are also continuously working to identify topics of interest to our membership, and to provide opportunities for educational and social events for both our members & our communities.  Please contact us at ccaps.office@gmail.com to share your priorities, perspectives, and requests for CCAPS. We have a wonderful state and society, and I am flattered to help lead such an inspiring group of child & adolescent psychiatrists.  With your help, we will carry on the long tradition of excellence at CCAPS!
