Research Institute
(Formerly Known as the Research Forum)

"A diversified portfolio of research initiatives is needed not only to expand the body of scientific knowledge about mental disorders of childhood, but also to heighten society's awareness of these disorders and the enormous social costs they entail."
- 1989 Institute of Medicine Report

Purpose

The main objective of the Research Institute is to drive the research policy agenda of child and adolescent psychiatry. Since research is the first step in developing more effective treatments for patients and in improving our understanding of mental health, it is important to create an intellectual environment that supports and promotes scientific inquiry. During the 2000 AACAP Annual Meeting, the Research Forum was established in order to encourage such an environment.

Goals

  • To emphasize the importance of research in child and adolescent psychiatry and the study of mental health disorders;
  • To improve the dissemination of research-supported information relevant to the mental health of children and adolescents; and
  • To create an environment that encourages scientific exploration and collaboration with investigators across disciplines.
