Institution Considerations

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, AACAP has created the Coronavirus Resource Library to assist families and physicians during this time.

  1. Become aware of the range of family-friendly policies and practices in the workplace.

  2. Actively advocate for others.

  3. Establish paid family leave of at least 12 weeks for a new child or care of an elderly parent.

  4. Create alternative, gender-neutral career tracks available to all, with reduced hours and workload, flex-time, job-sharing, and stopping/slowing down the tenure clock.

  5. Explore options for career breaks, such as an unpaid sabbatical with retraining opportunities to assist with re-entry for those who take time off.

  6. Establish expectations and create incentives and training for effective mentoring and career guidance for junior faculty or practitioners as part of the responsibility of department chairs and senior faculty.

  7. Schedule administrative meetings and educational offerings at times that do not conflict with childcare pickups and other family responsibilities.

  8. Provide high-quality, on-site childcare and/or up-to-date info on childcare resources, including school break childcare, summer camps, and emergency care for sick children. This should also be available for eldercare.

  9. Identify individuals to serve as ombudspersons or senior administrators who are assigned to support work-family/personal life balance.

  10. Provide transparency about requirements for promotion and attaining leadership positions, uniformity in dealing with everyone.
