AACAP Stands Unequivocally Against Any Measures to Eliminate Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) from Medical Education

Washington, DC, May 1, 2024  – The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) strongly opposes any initiatives aimed at restricting the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in medical education. DEI principles are fundamental in preparing a medical workforce that is equipped to address the needs of our increasingly diverse society.

DEI initiatives enhance the learning environment by providing a broad spectrum of perspectives and experiences, crucial for the development of child and adolescent psychiatrists who are culturally competent and can deliver high-quality care to all segments of the population. Efforts to ban DEI in educational settings hinder the ability of physicians to tackle the unique challenges faced by diverse, minoritized, and underserved communities, not only compromising the quality of medical care but also the breadth of understanding necessary to effectively address mental health disparities.

AACAP remains committed to advocating for policies that support DEI in medical education, ensuring that future child and adolescent psychiatrists are prepared to meet the complex needs of the patients and families our members serve.
