Getting into a CAP Fellowship

CAP Programs

Visit the ACGME website's Institution and Program Finder

  • Select “Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (405)” in the specialty dropdown box and click the View Report button to generate a list of CAP programs.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Application Process Overview

  • Investigate fellowship programs – See here.
  • Apply directly to fellowship programs via the fellowship’s own application or by using AAMC’s ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service)
  • Participate in the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) via the Specialties Matching Service® Fellowship Match
  • Applications typically open in July and must be submitted by late September or early October, depending on the program.
  • Interviews are often virtual, conducted from September through November.

Required Application Materials

Standard components submitted via ERAS include:

  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Medical School Transcript & Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
  • USMLE (or COMLEX) Scores — completion of Step III is frequently required.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation, typically:
    • One from your Residency Program Director
    • At least one from a child/adolescent psychiatry faculty member (encouraged or required)
  • Program Director's Attestation or Training Verification Form, affirming eligibility.
  • Photo, Medical Diploma, and if applicable, ECFMG certificate for international graduates — J‑1 visas are most supported.
