Objective

In order to ensure that all future physicians receive essential education in child, adolescent, and family mental health, we need to increase exposure to CAP in the undergraduate curriculum. ADMSEP Council has approved a list of benchmark CAP learning objectives. To help you implement these objectives, we have put together a toolbox of online resources that you may find helpful.

PLEASE NOTE:

• These resources have been generously contributed by CAP educators, which include members of AACAP, ADMSEP, AADPRT, and AAP.
• The CAPME Task Force is providing them as a service to ADMSEP and AACAP members.
• A formal peer-review of these materials has not been conducted by the CAPME Task Force, although they may have been published elsewhere.

2. We encourage you to consult with the CAP training director at your institution about ways to improve CAP in your medical school curriculum.
3. You may find it useful to discuss implementation of the CAP learning objectives with other clerkship directors (particularly pediatrics and family medicine) as well as the curriculum committee at your school.

II. Clinical Exposure

1. Please ensure that every clerkship student receives at least a half-day of CAP exposure. If their primary site is all adults, arrange for them to be excused for the CAP experience. This could be an outpatient clinic or a school consultation, for example. This works best if there is a CAP mentor at the site.
2. Identify a variety of CAP settings in the community, such as outpatient clinics or school consultation. Your AACAP regional organization should be able to help identify settings. The severity of pathology on the inpatient unit can be overwhelming for an initial experience.
3. Encourage M-1s to apply for AACAP Summer Medical Student Fellowships.
4. Ask community child psychiatrists to be longitudinal care preceptors. Your AACAP regional organization should be able to help identify volunteer faculty.

III. Research and Mentoring

1. Encourage medical students to sign up for a mentor through AACAP's Mentorship Network.
2. Encourage students to apply for the AACAP Summer Fellowship Programs (both Spurlock and CFAK).
3. Create list of CAP fellows, CAP faculty, and community child psychiatrists who are willing to be advisors and mentors for medical students. Clinical activities could range from chatting over lunch to providing shadowing opportunities. CAP researchers may be able to provide research assistant opportunities for medical students.

IV. Psychiatry Interest Group/PsychSIGN
Assign a CAP faculty advisor as well as a general psychiatry advisor to the psychiatry interest group. Sponsor local and regional interest group events that are CAP-related. These may be interdisciplinary cooperative efforts, such as with pediatrics and family medicine, discussing child PTSD or ADHD.

1. Keep the psychiatry interest group informed about AACAP opportunities. These include free medical student membership, national and state activities, and special medical student programs at the annual meeting. The site lists summer fellowship opportunities just for medical students. This site also provides articles, brochures and videos describing careers in CAP and workforce issues.
2. Encourage medical student involvement with PsychSIGN.

This list would be useful for medical students and residents interested in CAP opportunities, and could be shared with the psychiatry interest group.
