How Social Media Impacts Mental Health, and What Clinicians Should Do About It

Social media affects developmental processes of youth that include formation of identity, sexuality, intimacy, and socialization. Understanding the impacts of social media, both positive and negative, on the mental health of youth is important to proper assessment and treatment of psychopathology. Presenters provide a thorough review of the latest research regarding trends in social media use and explore how clinicians can evaluate and respond to the digital lives and experiences of patients as a routine part of mental health assessment and treatment. Issues specific to excessive social media use are explored, e.g., cyberbullying, sexting, pornography, digital distraction, and implications for social and sexual development. Clinicians learn to incorporate a social media history into assessment, to address media related concerns with patients and their families, and to consider social media as a tool for communicating with the public.
