Systems of Care Special Program: Addressing Racially Disparate Outcomes in Child-Serving Systems of Care: A Call for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

This Institute focuses on factors that perpetuate and have the potential to mitigate disparate mental health outcomes for youth of color, and on ways child and adolescent psychiatrists can integrate awareness of racism and racial disparities to improve care within a variety of child serving systems of care. Policies that impact the well-being, development, and trajectory of mental health for children of color, in particular for Black children, are considered and discussed. Participants gain a better understanding of social and structural inequities; learn to identify critical actions and leverage points for reducing inequities and racially disparate outcomes in mental health for children with serious emotional disturbance; and can identify strategies to address inequities in risk, services, and outcomes by identifying community priorities and using a structural and systems approach to care.
