Diagnostic and Treatment Challenges: An Autism Spectrum Disorder Update for Clinicians
Child and adolescent psychiatrists are often called upon to assess and manage mood dysregulation, psychosis, disruptive behaviors, and substance use disorder in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Through a review of the diagnostic approach and current treatment perspectives, clinicians learn about the most up-to-date research on assessment and management of ASD and related psychiatric conditions. There is special emphasis on the risk of substance use disorders, technology-based interventions, and transition-age related challenges. Participants learn how to integrate psychopharmacologic, behavioral, and educational interventions into treatment, and understand how to create realistic plans for helping patients achieve improved functioning and adaptive life skills. The evidence-based role of assistive technology interventions is discussed.
