Eating Disorders in Children, Adolescents, and Transition-Age Youth: Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Eating disorders generally require a multidisciplinary care team to manage the complicated medical and psychiatric symptoms. Child and adolescent psychiatrists must be able to distinguish true pre-morbid and co-morbid conditions from those better attributable to malnutrition. This Institute delves into the different eating disorder diagnoses and helps clinicians incorporate medical knowledge about etiology and epidemiology into their practice, allowing them to effectively screen, assess, diagnose, and refer youth with disordered eating to appropriate treatment. Participants gain understanding of evidence-based interventions, including medical monitoring, psychosocial treatments, and psychotropic medication use. A discussion of concerns unique to male patients, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) patients, and transition age youth provides information on effective management of these patients.
