Pediatric Suicide: Updates on Research and Clinical Approaches
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth 10-24 years of age. Although there are established evidence-based tools to screen, stratify risk, and evaluate suicidal ideation in children and adolescents, the task of predicting and preventing suicide remains difficult. This Institute addresses this important topic, providing insight into the current state of research and outlining the need for a complex approach to identify, evaluate, and efficiently intervene to reduce self-injury, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Topics include current epidemiology research, evidence-based screening tools, utilization of biological markers, effective and sustainable screening across settings, novel approaches to evaluation and interventions, and implementable clinical pathways. The impact of working with suicidal youth and approaches to prevent burnout are discussed.
