A Clinical Update of Intellectual Developmental Disorder: Assessment and Management of Core and Co-occurring Features
Participants receive current, evidence-based information on the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) and co-occurring psychopathology. An IDD diagnosis uses adaptive functioning, how a person copes with common everyday tasks, not an IQ score. Common tasks in conceptual, social, and practical domains are all examined to determine diagnosis and level of severity, allowing the clinician to be more specific with the diagnosis and indicate to others what the individual is able to accomplish in a given setting. Participants learn to identify and assess common co-occurring psychopathology seen in psychiatric practice, including anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, mood disorder, and irritability, with an emphasis on the two most common clinical issues affecting families and patient with IDD—sleep and sexuality. Participants learn about treatment management options that can improve quality of life for caregivers and patients with IDD.
