Advanced Psychopharmacology
New medications and medication-combinations have expanded and enhanced the child and adolescent psychiatrist’s ability to treat psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. However, clinicians are often unaware of some of the newest findings or struggle with complicated cases requiring more advanced psychopharmacology including monotherapy of novel agents or combined medication strategies. This Institute provides a higher level of understanding about the use of medications in general, discusses newer treatments available, and provides approaches to refractory or more complicated children and adolescents with psychopathology, e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, anxiety, bipolar and unipolar mood disorders, and sleep disorders. The use of pharmacotherapeutics as an adjunct treatment for eating disorders is presented. The science of second messengers and mechanisms of signal transduction involved in response to treatment is reviewed. An emphasis on applying fundamental principles of pharmacotherapy is made throughout the Institute.
