When a child has ADHD, the parents, child, teachers, and doctors need to work together as a team to understand the disorder and develop the appropriate treatment plan to the allow the child to reach his or her full potential. Together, you can set goals for your child. Getting the right treatment can allow you to reach your goals.
As a parent, you can help your child:
- Gain a better self-image
- Succeed in school
- Follow classroom and household rules
- Have successful friendships
- Reduce behaviors that lead to problems
You know your child better than anyone else. Trust your thoughts and feelings. Do not be afraid to speak up if you don’t think your child is getting the right help. Share your thoughts with your child’s doctor or school. Continue to ask questions.
Keep working to help your child improve. With the right treatment, your child can become better able to pay attention, control everyday behavior and gain self-confidence.
As symptoms begin to improve, you can begin to better appreciate your child.You can enjoy your child’s boundless energy, warmth, and enthusiasm. The whole family can benefit from your child’s progress.
