Systems of Care Information and Resources

At least one in 20 children and adolescents--as many as 3 million young people--may have a serious emotional disturbance that severely disrupts life at home, school, and in the community.

In an effective "system of care," schools, community mental health centers, psychiatric treatment programs, social service organizations, juvenile justice programs, and primary health care organizations coordinate services to most effectively address the needs of these children while allowing them to remain in their community.

The AACAP promotes the development of systems of care that are informed by the principles of child and adolescent psychiatry through the work of the Work Group on Community Systems of Care for Children with Serious Emotional Disturbances and the Hospitalization and Continuum of Care Committee.
