CME and Maintenance of Certification – What’s the Difference?
As a professional medical organization, one of AACAP’s roles is to provide continuing education to its members. The CME activities that the AACAP offers are designed to improve clinical treatment of children and adolescents, improve the health and development of infants, children and adolescents, carry out research in basic science, and keep child and adolescent psychiatrists up-to-date on recent developments within the field. AACAP does not require its members to complete a certain number of credit hours each year.
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) require that all child and adolescent psychiatrists certified after 1994 become recertified every ten years. The AACAP and the ABPN have joined in a collaborative process that links lifelong learning with self assessment in child and adolescent psychiatry to recertification. AACAP aims to help members maintain their certification.
The ABPN’s four Maintenance of Certification components include 1)evidence of professional standing; 2) lifelong learning and self-assessment - this process requires members to earn 30 hours of category 1 CME credits annually for a total of 300 hours in the 10-year cycle, and complete self-assessment activities; 3) complete performance in practice modules; and 4) take a cognitive exam at the end of the 10-year cycle. AACAP’s CME programs provide a way to aid members in the recertification process.
