Protective and Risk Factors in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder: Predicting Outcomes

Tuesday, October 24
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (separate registration)

Please Note: This registration is separate from your AACAP Annual Meeting registration and needs to be paid for separately.

There is still a considerable amount of controversy pertaining to the topic of pediatric bipolar disorder. Yet there is substantial
evidence that children and adolescents with bipolar I disorder are at high risk for significant impairment and poor outcomes both acutely and over the long-term. There are some youths who have better outcomes than others. In addition, it appears that the most common expression of bipolar-like illnesses in youths, particularly young children, are conditions with symptoms of bipolarity that do not meet strict criteria for the more “prototypic” expressions of bipolar illness. Definitive data that can inform the field regarding what precisely happens to these children remains an important and under-studied topic.

Sponsored by the Work Group on Research, the aim of this Research Forum is to examine rates of recovery for children, adolescents, and adults with bipolar disorder, and to see what developmental and other differences and commonalities might emerge when various outcomes are considered. The proceedings focus on positive rather than negative outcomes, when possible. The ultimate goal of the child and adolescent psychiatry Research Forum is to help clinicians provide means by which to more accurately understand, assess, and effectively intervene on behalf of their patients. The Research Forum helps to provide the field with a cogent summation of what is known, what needs to be known, and means by which future research can help researchers learn more about this condition so that the lives of children and adolescents suffering from bipolar illnesses can be improved.
