Thinking about going into business for yourself? This Workshop is for child and adolescent psychiatrists who are considering opening, but have not yet opened, a private practice. It provides an overview of the types of private practices, a timetable for the many tasks required to successfully launch your practice, and factors to consider in making decisions. Factors such as budgeting for expenses and income; where and what kind of practice to establish, marketing, fees, forms, scheduling, billing, and negotiating managed care contracts are covered. In addition, important issues to consider before committing to an electronic health record system are discussed.

Knowledge of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research opportunities, mechanisms, and processes are critical skills for new as well as established researchers seeking funding for training and research in child and adolescent psychiatry. This workshop familiarizes new investigators with the grant writing and grant review process within the NIH systems. The workshop includes interactive discussion on career paths and NIH grant opportunities. NIH staff and senior researchers present current NIH grant mechanisms available for emerging scholars/young investigators and strategies for a successful research grant review, as well as current NIDA and NIMH research priorities. Participants have the opportunity to interact with program staff and senior researchers in small groups for individualized feedback on grant writing and successful strategies for obtaining NIH research grant funding.

The Successful Transition to Practice is a member forum for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows and early career psychiatrists to explore practical issues which characterize the transition from trainee to attending psychiatrist. The 2011 member services forum introduces core competencies in the transition to practice through introductory lecture, panel discussion, skills workshops, and a networking roundtable. The forum provides trainees and early career psychiatrists with a new skill set to approach the developmental transition and create a valuable opportunity to network with peers and mentors from across the country.

This SIG provides the opportunity for child and adolescent psychiatry residents and early and mid-career female psychiatrists to develop a mentor network to provide career guidance. Those who have an interest in how to develop a professional code of conduct, who are struggling with personal or institutional ethical dilemmas in research protocols, or physicians in private practice who are questioning professional boundaries with referral sources, patients, and/or pharmaceutical companies will find this special interest group very helpful.
Early Career Psychiatrists (ECPs) Finding Our Way: A Mentorship Forum for ECPs and Their AACAP Regional Organizations

The Early Career Psychiatrist (ECP) Mentorship Forum provides ECPs with a structured opportunity for making mentorship connections with other child and adolescent psychiatrists in their geographic region. Representatives from AACAP Regional Organizations and ECPs are brought together for roundtable discussions to promote ECP involvement and mentorship. The program reinforces effective practices in the mentee/mentor relationship while raising awareness of local AACAP resources and fostering ECP interest in active involvement in local AACAP activities. As a result, ECPs gain a better understanding of how to utilize mentorship, feel more connected to their regional organization, and make use of the regional organization as a mentorship resource.
