WASHINGTON, DC — The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is proud to be a part of the Campaign for Mental Health Reform (CMHR), a coalition of sixteen national organizations that will release a landmark report: Emergency Response: A Roadmap for Federal Action on America’s Mental Health Crisis tomorrow.

The report will mark the second anniversary of the report by President Bush’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, “Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America.” The Commission found that the U.S. mental health system is, “fragmented and in disarray, lead[ing] to unnecessary and costly disability, homelessness, school failure and incarceration.”

The CMHR’s Roadmap proposes specific action items that Congress and the Administration should take to reform the public mental health system, including increased access to children’s mental health specialists such as child and adolescent psychiatrists. AACAP President, Richard Sarles, M.D., said, “The Campaign’s Roadmap for transforming mental health care in the United States is critical, especially for children, adolescents, and families living with mental illnesses. We look forward to working with the Campaign, Congress, and the Administration to achieve the Roadmap’s necessary goals.”

The report will be released tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27th, at 8:45 a.m. in the LBJ Room at the U.S. Capitol Building, in Washington, D.C. Speakers will include Sens. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) Michael DeWine (R-OH), Reps. Jim Ramstad (R-MN), Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), Grace Napolitano (D-CA) and CMHR coalition member leadership.

Members of the press are asked to confirm attendance by calling the Campaign for Mental Health Reform at 202.587.2984.
