AACAP Action Leads to AMA Call for Report on Physician Participation in Interrogations, Upholds Policy on Patient Confidentiality
American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) action has led to a decision by the American Medical Association House of Delegates (AMA HOD) to prepare a report and develop appropriate ethical guidelines regarding physician participation in the interrogation of prisoners and detainees. The AMA HOD also announced formal policy on the presence of outside observers during clinical encounters. The actions came during the interim policy making meeting of the AMA HOD in Dallas in response to resolutions developed and introduced by the AACAP.

AACAP Announces Minority Medical Student Fellowship Winners
Minority Medical Student Fellowship The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2005 CMHS Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Clinical Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The fellowship exposes minority medical students to child and adolescent psychiatry by providing them opportunities to work with outstanding child and adolescent psychiatrist mentors and is supported by the Center for Mental Health Services. The purpose of the fellowship is to recruit more minority child and adolescent psychiatrists.

AACAP Announces Pilot Research Awards
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry announces the recipients of the 2005 AACAP Pilot Research Awards supported by Eli Lilly and Company. These awards offer $9,000 to support one year of research to outstanding junior faculty and child and adolescent psychiatry fellows at the beginning of their research careers. Recipients were required to submit project proposals and will present their findings at the Joint AACAP/CACAP Annual Meeting in Toronto, ON, Canada October 18-23, 2005.

AACAP Recognizes the 2005 Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellow
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) recognizes the 2005 recipient of the Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellowship, a joint fellowship supported by the AACAP and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The fellowship provides general psychiatry and child psychiatry residents an opportunity to work on federal health policy in a Congressional office or committee, particularly on policy related to child and minority issues. Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., whom the fellowship is named for, was an advocate for child and minority issues and a former deputy medical director of APA and head of its Office of Minority and National Affairs.

AACAP and APA Ask FDA to Monitor Youth SSRI Prescription Drop
Following the release of new data that shows a significant decline in antidepressant prescription for youth under 18, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) have asked the Food and Drug Administration to monitor the effects of the prescription decrease since the agency’s October, 2004 black box warning on antidepressants.

AACAP Offers Resources for Military Families
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) has created a Facts for Families “Coming Home: Adjustments for Military Families,” in response to the emotional needs of returning members of the military. Available free of charge on AACAP's website in English and Spanish, AACAP developed the fact sheet in response to the unique challenges that many military families experience after a long deployment. The fact sheet is a companion piece to AACAP’s Facts for Families “Families in the Military.”
