Legislative Action 109th Congress
AACAP Member Action Needed Over Summer Recess to Advance Workforce Bill

Congress will be in recess for the summer beginning July 31st through September 5th for the House and from August 4th through September 5th for the Senate. This recess is the perfect time to schedule a district office visit with your Representative and Senators to request their support for the AACAP’s priority workforce legislation, the Child Health Care Crisis Relief Act, H.R. 1106/S. 537. The AACAP Dept. of Government Affairs (DGA) will coordinate congressional district office visits for you, including scheduling the meeting, providing you with briefing materials and talking points on the issues and finding other AACAP members/family members to accompany you in a strong children’s mental health delegation – all you have to do is attend the meeting!

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of AACAP Assembly and Society of Professors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (SPCAP) members on the May 5th Advocacy Day, the workforce bill is at its highest ever level of support. The House bill, H.R. 1106, now has 68 bipartisan cosponsors and the Senate bill, S. 537, has 20. The new cosponsors are Reps. Fattah (D-PA), Gerlach (R-PA), and Emanuel (D-IL), and Sens. Menendez (D-NJ) and Lieberman (D-CT). We thank AACAP CT, IL, NJ, and PA members for their efforts in gaining these cosponsorships.

If you are available in August to do a congressional visit, please contact the DGA by July 27th, as visits need to be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. Contact Sarah Mechum at Smechum@aacap.org or call 800.333.7636, ext. 128, to schedule your congressional visit today!

The CHCCRA will help alleviate the national shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists and other child mental health professionals by creating education incentives to encourage recruitment into these fields. For child and adolescent psychiatry, the legislation would restore graduate medical education (GME) funding support to child and adolescent psychiatry training programs, and create a loan forgiveness program for use by child and adolescent psychiatry trainees.

Thank you for your action!
