Workshop O: Touchpoints: A Developmental-Relational Approach to Prevention in Multiply-Stressed Families

Thursday, October 25 - SOLD OUT
2:00 – 5:00 p.m. (ticket)
Joshua D Sparrow, M.D., T. Berry Brazelton, M.D.

In this Workshop the key elements, general principles, and unique strategies of the “Touchpoints” approach for working with multiplystressed families of young children are introduced. “Touchpoints” are developmental events in which predictable strides ahead in one area of development are accompanied or preceded by equally predictable temporary regressions or loss of recently acquired skills, often in other developmental lines. The opportunities for prevention and the strengths-based, collaborative, and empowering strategies for practitioners that emerge from this model are outlined. Participants are guided through a reflective practice process in which they are encouraged to examine and enhance their interactive strategies for supporting parental emotional availability and perceived parental competence, thereby strengthening families and optimizing child development.
