Workshop M: Empirically-Supported Treatments for Adolescents with Depression: Pharmacological and Cognitive-Behavioral Approaches

Thursday, October 25 - SOLD OUT
8:00 – 11:00 a.m. (ticket)
Mark A. Reinecke, Ph.D., Christopher J. Kratochvil, M.D.

This Workshop reviews the pharmacology and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment protocols developed for the Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS), and discusses how they can be used in clinical practice. The presentation begins with a brief review of the etiology, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of pediatric depression, and discusses useful diagnostic and assessment instruments. TADS pharmacology and CBT treatment protocols are presented along with a discussion of how each can be used in clinical practice. The integrative “socio-cognitive” model for depression which served as the foundation for the CBT protocol is addressed. The Workshop concludes with a discussion of findings from the TADS project regarding the efficacy of fluoxetine and CBT, predictors and moderators of acute treatment response, functional improvement, and maintenance of gains over time.
