Workshop LL: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment

Saturday, October 27
12:00 – 3:00 p.m. (ticket)
W. Ben Gibbard, M.D., M.C.S., M.Sc., John D. McLennan, M.D., Ph.D., FRCP, Karen Serrett, Ph.D.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) represent a group of conditions that include combinations of physical, behavioral, and neuropsychological manifestation due to prenatal alcohol exposure. In particular, prenatal alcohol exposure can cause a continuum of central nervous system dysfunction from specific neuropsychologic deficits to obvious structural abnormalities. In addition to these neuropsychologic deficits, individuals with FASD are at increased risk for secondary disabilities and mental health co-morbidities. This Workshop reviews existing diagnostic frameworks and practice guidelines for FASD, provides in-depth review of the neuropsychologic deficits and mental health co-morbidities found in individuals with FASD, and reviews existing treatment strategies and support approaches for this population.
