This Workshop is designed to enable child and adolescent psychiatrists to better understand and advocate for children with complex learning disorders. The characteristics of and distinctions between verbal and nonverbal learning disabilities are reviewed. This is followed by discussion of the components of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment to provide attendees with the means to critically evaluate the quality of evaluations they may receive. The impact of learning disabilities on development and the relevance of learning and cognitive difficulties to psychiatric presentations and treatment planning are illustrated with case vignettes.
