Teaching for Success: Leadership and Skill-Building in Child Psychiatric Education
Thursday, October 25
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (open)

The most effective educators must realize a leadership role, and in this capacity, educators have considerable influence over not only what our students or trainees learn, but perhaps more importantly, how they learn.

Program Description
Effective teaching is a critical component of conveying the depth, complexity, fascination, creativity, and fun of our field to medical students and others to augment recruitment into the field. There is a science, as well as an art, to teaching, learning, and education that enhances effective communication in all spheres: from one-on-one supervision to media bites and telecommunications. The hope is that the AACAP membership will benefit from this intensive “Teach the Teachers” enterprise through an ongoing sharing of expertise and collaborative educational initiatives.

This presentation is an intensive 4-hour experience to present the scientific backdrop for teaching effective communication and leadership skills, followed by breakout workshops focused on specific teaching skills. The program begins with a one-hour plenary address by an internationally known leader in the field of education and leadership development to provide an overview of the power of effective communication and leadership that emanates from the skill of converting deeply held principles, convictions, and expertise into active teaching, education, and goal-oriented systems development.

Following the plenary, there will be two breakout workshops to allow members to discuss in more depth and gain skills in two areas of effective communication and teaching. Both workshops will be interactive, participatory, skill-building sessions using a variety of teaching strategies.

Workshop #1
Superior Supervision in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: How to Get There This workshop focuses on the most effective methods of transmitting information and assisting the student in skill-building through supervision.

Workshop #2
Teaching to the Student: Effective and Innovative Strategies This workshop, beginning with a review of student learning styles, will focus on the most effective methods to teach based on the outcome goals of the educational enterprise. As with any skill, utilizing effective techniques and personalizing these to an individual’s strengths and personal style optimizes skill acquisition.

Audience
This session is meant for all child and adolescent psychiatrists who are involved with teaching any level of trainee or professional and are a result of the AACAP Harvard Macy Physician Educator Program.
