54th Annual Meeting Program
Opportunities for Medical Students, Residents and Early Career Psychiatrists

Mentorship Program for Medical Students and Residents (invitation only
The Mentorship Program matches residents and medical students with senior child and adolescent psychiatrists. Small groups are formed in which the students and psychiatrists can form a collegial relationship that includes the sharing of ideas, challenges, and accomplishments. Some topics include balancing personal and professional obligations, securing an intellectually stimulating peer environment, networking, writing and publishing, research activities, and becoming active in local and national advocacy initiatives. Groups present what they have discussed at the final presentation.

Research Seminar for Early Investigators 
This seminar is an opportunity for young investigators to explore research opportunities with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Representatives from NIH and academic research centers are on hand to discuss research training programs and opportunities for mentorship.

Resident Town Meeting 
The Resident Town Meeting is an opportunity for residents and medical students to learn about AACAP and ways to become active in its work by joining components/committees. Residents also have a chance to voice their concerns and network with other residents, as well as early career psychiatrists. The meeting is held as a moderated open forum, so that current events and topics that are important to those present are discussed. 

9:30 – 11:00 a.m. (invitation only) 

Resident Representative Meeting 
The Resident Representative Meeting gives these representatives the chance to meet with the Committee leaders to give feedback on the Resident Representative Program. The goal is to identify potential changes and suggestions that can be made to improve the overall program. Topics to be covered include the recruitment process for the Program, the exchange of ideas and experiences between child and adolescent psychiatrist (CAP) trainees at different programs, and the involvement of CAP trainees in the mentorship of medical students and general psychiatry residents. 

5:30 – 7:00 p.m. (open) 

Medical Student and Resident Reception 
The Medical Student and Resident Reception provides students and residents the opportunity to network with peers, training directors, mentors, and AACAP members. The AACAP members, including accomplished researchers, clinicians, and educators, offer testimonials and insight on the transition into child and adolescent psychiatry.

Medical Student, Resident and Early Career Psychiatrist Breakfast 
This breakfast symposium focuses on the needs and challenges of students and residents exploring a career in child and adolescent psychiatry by presenting a range of viable and exciting pathways into the field. Three exciting speakers describe their varied paths toward fulfilling careers as child and adolescent psychiatrists. 

8:00 – 11:00 a.m. (ticket) 

Grant Writing Workshop and Mock IRG Panel 
This workshop provides an introduction into the NIH research grant application process. Participants will receive a tutorial on grant writing basics and how to improve grant writing skills. Experienced investigators as well as representatives from NIH will present a mock review panel providing participants a real glimpse at the internal review process.

Early Career Psychiatrist Focus Group 
The Early Career Psychiatrist Focus Group is a moderated discussion which aims to survey and address the interests and concerns of early career psychiatrists and to familiarize early career psychiatrists with how to become involved in AACAP. In addition to the discussion, there is a brief survey to elicit feedback regarding attendees’ experiences at the Annual Meeting.

The Resident as a Teacher: Building Skills for Residency and Beyond
 This teaching seminar provides an introduction to principles that are directly applicable to the teaching and supervision of junior residents and medical students. Recently graduated trainees describe their own teaching experiences, and training directors of large child and adolescent psychiatry training programs offer their insight and experience followed by group discussion.
