In the past, school consultants had a meager evidence base on which to substantiate their suggestions to school staffs. The information to provide educators was largely based on experience from senior consultants that was passed on as the working knowledge. Exposure during training to school personnel and issues also decreased subsequent to the reduced emphasis on consultation in board exams for child psychiatry. Now, the picture is beginning to reverse itself because of intersecting trends that are leading to a growing objective knowledge and demands for services. Epidemiological studies have shown that when youth do get mental health services, the most common delivery setting is schools. Consequently, the demand for mental health services in schools has risen and the importance of accountability and evidence-based interventions has been acknowledged in education as in the various fields of medicine. Schools are faced with new demands and are increasingly asked to deliver services through a variety of approaches. This Institute strives to address these new demands facing child and adolescent psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who work and consult in schools, focusing both in school programs in which consultants often work, as well as specific issues on which they consult.
