Over the past decade, there has been a rapidly increasing interest in the pharmacotherapeutics of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Introductory pharmacotherapy Institutes have been very helpful in orienting clinicians to the major psychiatric disorders and their first line treatments. However, clinicians are often left with complicated cases requiring more advanced psychopharmacology including monotherapy of novel agents or combined medication strategies.
The overarching aim of this Institute is to provide a higher level of understanding of using medications in general, and, in particular, in more complicated refractory children and adolescents with psychopathology. An emphasis on applying fundamental principles of pharmacotherapy is made throughout the Institute. Presenters provide empirical data (both negative and positive) and/or systematic clinical observations of treatment of the various psychiatric disorders presented. An emphasis on difficult cases with the use of case examples for teaching purposes is employed.
