Washington, D.C., October 22, 2009
—The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce W. Peter Metz, M.D., and the Communities of Care Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, as the recipient of AACAP's 2009 Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Service Program Award for Excellence.

“My experience with Communities of Care has greatly expanded my understanding of how a child and adolescent psychiatrist can best provide leadership and otherwise fit into the larger system of care,” said Dr. Metz. “It has fundamentally changed the way I think about working with children, adolescents, and their families.”

The award honors Dr. Metz’s initiation and continuous involvement as a leader of two “System of Care” 6 year cooperative agreements with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), through the Child and Family Branch of the Center for Mental Health Services, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and Executive Office of Health and Human Services. Communities of Care has supported the provision of a wraparound service planning process as well as other services, including support to family organizations, implementation of evidence-based practices, and creation of a Youth and Family Center model. ”Lessons learned” from Communities of Care have provided important input to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the design of its state-wide effort to provide intensive home and community-based services through the MA Child Behavioral Health Initiative.

The award, supported by the Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Foundation, was established in 1996 to recognize innovative programs that address prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of mental illnesses in children and adolescents. The award honors programs that serve as models and provides financial support to the nominee and service program.

Dr. Metz presents, “Communities of Care: Ten Year Experience with Supporting the Establishment of a System of Care,” during Honors Presentation 3 on Thursday, October 29 from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. at AACAP’s Annual Meeting at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, Hawaii.

For more information about the award, please contact Amanda Greenberg, Communications Coordinator, at 202.966.7300 x154 or agreenberg@aacap.org.
