Washington, D.C., October 23, 2009
– The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce Peter Szatmari, M.D., Head of Psychiatry at McMaster University, as the recipient of AACAP’s George Tarjan Award for Contributions in Developmental Disabilities.

“I must thank the children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families for sharing both their successes and their tragedies with me,” Dr. Szatmari said in a written statement. “Those experiences have given me both with the questions to pursue and the insights into the answers of those questions. Working with these families has provided me with the motivation to persevere even if it sometimes feels as if the answers become more elusive as we go.”

This award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has made significant contributions in a lifetime career or single seminal work to the understanding or care of those with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. These contributions must have national and/or international stature and clearly demonstrate lasting effects. The contributions may be in areas of teaching, research, program development, direct clinical service, advocacy or administrative commitment.

Dr. Szatmari presents, “Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Disease, the Illness and the Predicament,” at Honors Presentation 9 on Saturday, October 31 from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. at AACAP’s Annual Meeting at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, Hawaii.

For more information on the award, please contact Amanda Greenberg, Communications Coordinator, at 202.966.7300 x 154 or agreenberg@aacap.org.
