Washington, D.C., October 22, 2009 – The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce Penelope Knapp, M.D., as the recipient of AACAP’s Irving Philips Award for Prevention. The annual award is given to a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has made significant contributions to the field of prevention of mental illnesses in children and adolescents.
“It is essential to keep one’s sights on a vision of prevention and to adjust the focus when necessary. Pilot programs are only as good as the path, or way they pilot; that way must include structural change for sustained funding or maintenance of effort,” said Dr. Knapp in a written statement.
Through Dr. Knapp’s position as Medical Director, State of California Department of Mental Health, she was able to obtain funding for prevention projects that were carried out in a variety of healthcare systems. Programs included building personnel and administrative infrastructure to serve preschool children with mental health disorders, promoting change in policy requirements for standardized screening for well child visits, screening for pre-conception and prenatal risk and recognition and treatment of postpartum and maternal depression.
AACAP’s Irving Philips Award for Prevention was established in 1993 in honor of Irving Philips, M.D. Dr. Philips served as AACAP President from 1985-1987 and was renowned for his work in the field of prevention.
Dr. Knapp presents, “Meet the Malady on Its Way: The Case for Prevention of Psychopathology,” during Honors Presentation 2 on Thursday, October 29 from 8:00 to 8:50 a.m. at AACAP’s Annual Meeting at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, Hawaii.
For more information on the award, please contact Amanda Greenberg, Communications Coordinator, at 202.966.7300 x 154 or agreenberg@aacap.org.
