Washington, D.C., October 23, 2009 – The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce Nancy Harris as this year’s recipient of the Catchers in the Rye Humanitarian of the Year Award. The award was established in 1990 to honor those who have made significant contributions to society through support of child and adolescent psychiatry.

“Mrs. Harris is determined and works tirelessly to ensure that teens won’t suffer the way she did,” David B. Herzog, M.D., AACAP officer and founder of the Harvard Eating Disorders Center, stated. “She exemplifies the true meaning of a philanthropist by giving her whole self to the cause on top of her monetary contributions.”

Mrs. Harris is recognized for her outstanding leadership and personal commitment to advancing research and access to treatment for teens with eating disorders. After struggling with one herself for most of her life, Mrs. Harris has become a courageous advocate for people of all ages suffering from the same disorders.

In appreciation of advances in the field of eating disorder research, practice, and advocacy, Mrs. Harris made a generous $1 million gift to the Harvard Eating Disorders Center and helped to endow the first Harvard Medical School Chair in the field of eating disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In honor of her gift, the former Harvard Eating Disorders Center was renamed the Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Mrs. Harris accepts the Catchers in the Rye Humanitarian of the Year Award at the Karl Menninger, M.D. Plenary on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m.
