Louis Kraus, M.D., Elected to the American Medical Association's Council on Science and Public Health
AACAP and APA Congratulate Chicago Psychiatrist on Important Win

Washington, D.C., June 17th, 2008 - Louis Kraus, M.D., child and adolescent psychiatrist from Chicago, IL was elected to the American Medical Association House of Delegates Council on Science and Public Health. The House of Delegates is the principal policy-making body of the American Medical Association.

"We congratulate Dr. Kraus on this high honor and know he will make a valuable contribution to the Council," said AACAP President Robert L. Hendren, D.O. "As a leader in the field of child health and development, Dr. Kraus will be an important asset to the AMA and to the Council to improve the lives of America's children."

"The election of Dr. Kraus reflects the investment of the AMA and the profession of medicine in the science and practice of psychiatry," said APA President Nada Stotland, M.D., M.P.H.  "His participation in the deliberations of the Council on Science and Public Health will bring perspectives of a medical expert in mental health and the care of children to the activities and policies of the AMA."

Dr. Kraus has been an AMA delegate or alternate delegate since 1994.  His candidacy had broad support from the house of medicine.  He was supported by the Section Council on Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and endorsed by the Illinois State Medical Society, the AMA Specialty and Service Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the AMA Neuroscience Caucus.

On running for election, Dr. Kraus said, "My entire career has focused on public health issues for children and adolescents. My primary focus has been on educational issues and juvenile delinquency," adding that the opportunity to be a member of the AMA Council on Science and Public Health would allow him to bring his "expertise in public health as well as child and adolescent behavioral development to the debate around science and public health issues affecting our patients."

Dr. Kraus is the chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Rush University. He also serves as a consultant to the Department of Justice investigating civil rights abuses in juvenile detention centers and is a consultant to over fifteen school districts in the Chicago area.
