Washington, D.C., September 24, 2008—Child and adolescent psychiatrist John McDermott, M.D., will present “Emerging Multiculturalism in America and the Obama Phenomenon,” at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers on Thursday, October 30th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Dr. McDermott will speak about multiculturalism as a new phase of the American experience. He will present on the rapidly changing demographics of the United States, the psychosocial influence that Hawaii and Indonesia has on Senator Obama, and how Hawaii is illustrating the erosion of sharp boundaries among ethnic groups as America’s first multicultural society.

Dr. McDermott is the recipient of the AACAP’s annual Jeanne Spurlock Lecture and Award on Diversity and Culture. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the understanding of diversity and culture in the United States and the world as it pertains to mental health.

“I am truly and distinctly honored to receive this award, not only because cross cultural research and training have been at the heart of my career, but because Jeanne Spurlock was a long time friend and colleague. Attracting young people from other cultures into our field is one of the priorities of the Jeanne Spurlock Lecture and Award for Diversity and Culture”
