Washington, D.C., October 14, 2008 – The Kentucky Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (KCCAP) is the recipient of the 2008 American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) Catcher in the Rye Award. The AACAP honors the Kentucky Council’s efforts to educate legislators about the importance of supporting anti-bullying legislation.

“I thank the Kentucky Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for successfully persevering in educating lawmakers on behalf of families,” said AACAP President Robert Hendren, D.O.

In February 2008, the Kentucky Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry collaborated with the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and led a Children’s Advocacy Day at the Kentucky state Capitol. KCCAP members and pediatricians met with state senators and representatives and shared data and testimonials on the importance of protecting children by prohibiting bullying and harassment at school.

Despite the six-years of stalling HB 91, The Golden Rule Act was adopted and signed into law by Governor Steven Beshear. The Act states that any school employee who knows that a student is being a victim of bullying should immediately report abuse to the principal of the victim’s school.

The KCCAP spearheaded efforts to include advocacy skills training during medical school residency at the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky. Kentucky state legislators continue to seek the KCCAP consultation on a spectrum of children’s mental health issues.

The KCCAP joins 59 other AACAP regional organizations effecting change on a local and grassroots level. For more information on AACAP’s state advocacy initiatives, contact AACAP Assistant Director of State Advocacy R. Kevin Jones at 202.966.7300, ext. 107 or kjones@aacap.org.
