Washington, D.C., October 14, 2008 - The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce that the AACAP Committee on Medical Students, Residents, and Early Career Psychiatrists is the recipient of the AACAP Catcher in the Rye Award for Advocacy to a Component. The Committee received the award for its efforts to support recruitment of more child and adolescent psychiatrists.
The shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists is a major impediment for families to accessing quality treatment. One way that the AACAP is addressing this shortfall is through the creation of a mentorship program that connects medical students and residents with established child and adolescent psychiatrists. The program has grown from 130 participants to more than 250, due largely to the Committee’s leadership.
“I thank the Committee on Medical Students, Residents, and Early Career Child Psychiatrists for building a bridge to a successful and satisfying career for the next generation of child and adolescent psychiatrists,” said AACAP President, Robert Hendren, D.O. “The mentorship program’s robust growth is due, in large part, to the committee’s vision and creativity.”
“We would like to acknowledge and thank all those AACAP leaders who, through the years, have enriched our work with their suggestions, criticisms, and experience,” said Committee Co-Chairs David Lopez, M.D., and Anne Frederickson, M.D., in a written statement.
The mentorship program is among the many opportunities available to medicals students, residents, and early career child psychiatrists at the AACAP Annual Meeting.
